KitKat reached 5.3% of active devices

Android 4.x is still a leader with various Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean smartphones and tablets accounting for more than 80%. In comparison, Gingerbread is running on 17.8% (down from 19%), Froyo (Android 2.2) on 1.1%, and Honeycomb on just 0.1% devices.

Based on Google's information, the Android version with the most installs is Android 4.1.x Jelly Bean at 34.4%, following Android 4.2.x Jelly Bean with 18.1%.

Interestingly enough the next Jelly Bean build, Android 4.3, is taking a backseat to Android 2.3.3-2.3.7 Gingerbread and Android 4.0.3-4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, both of whom have about 17.8% and 14.3% of the install base respectively.

Google announced Android 4.4 KitKat on 3 September 2013 and debuted on Google's Nexus 5 on 31 October 2013.

This operative system was optimised to run on a greater range of devices than earlier Android versions, having 512 MB of RAM as a recommended minimum; those improvements were known as "Project Svelte" internally at Google.

Sundar Pichai, Google's Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome & Apps, said at the moment of the release that "Building a platform that makes mobile phones accessible for everyone has always been at the heart of Android".
