Panasonic posts US$1.17b FY net profit


Panasonic posts US$1.17b FY net profitJapanese electronics giant Panasonic on Monday booked its first annual net profit in three years and reversed a huge loss suffered in the previous 12 months as it presses on with a sweeping restructuring. In the period ended march, 31, the company reached 120 billion yen (US$1.17 billion) in net profit, after suffering a loss of 754.25 billion yen a year earlier, while revenue ticked up to 7.74 trillion yen from 7.30 trillion yen.

Dropbox acquires Loom and Hackpad

Dropbox has recently acquired Loom, a popular services that offers cloud-based photo storage, and Hackpard, a lightweight, document-collaboration web and mobile application. According to the company, users will be able to export data directly to Dropbox with no interruption in service. Hackpad will continue to operate, the company said in a blog post about the acquisition. Terms of the deals weren’t disclosed by the companies.

Zebra Technologies to acquiere Motorola Solutions' unit for US$3.5billion

Zebra Technologies purchase Motorola's unit
Zebra Technologies Corporation and Motorola Solutions, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement in which Zebra will acquire Motorola’s Enterprise business for $3.45 billion in an all-cash transaction. The acquisition will be funded through a combination of cash on hand and new debt. The transaction, which was approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies, is subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

ECLAC and UNICEF Propose Equality-Oriented Policies for High School Education

On average in Latin America, around 20 % of adolescents from ages 12 to 18-both male and female-do not attend any educational institution. To tackle both the causes and consequences of early desertion and delayed graduation, specific policies must be implemented that focus on human rights and gender equality, according to a study published by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and UNICEF's Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Office.

Imacec rose to 2.9% in february

According to preliminary information from Chile's Central Bank, last February the monthly economic indicator (IMACEC) rose 2.9% over the same month a year before. The seasonally-adjusted series increased 0.2% with respect to the previous month, and 2.5% in twelve months. The month came with the same number of working days as February 2013. The result reflected, mainly, dynamism in the mining and retail sectors.

LINE Surpasses 400 Million Registered Users


LINE, the instant messaging app from Japan, has announced that it reached 400 million registered users, after hitting the 300 million mark in November last year.  Since the launch of the LINE service on June 23, 2011, the app has become into a global communications app that lets users communicate through voice and video calls as well as stickers and text messages.

KitKat reached 5.3% of active devices


Android 4.x is still a leader with various Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean smartphones and tablets accounting for more than 80%. In comparison, Gingerbread is running on 17.8% (down from 19%), Froyo (Android 2.2) on 1.1%, and Honeycomb on just 0.1% devices.
